The Gandhi Mandap is located on Sarania hill in the core of the city of Guwahati, close to the Ulubari area. Thanks to its high elevation it's one of the city's vantage points.


Gandhi Mandap is around 4 km from Guwahati Railway Station and around 25 km from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport as per Assam Tourism.


📌History of Gandhi Mandap


Gandhi Mandap has a close association to the visit of Mahatma Gandhi to Assam.


Gandhiji visited Assam four times — in 1921, 1926, 1934 and 1946. In 1946 he stayed at Sarania Hill for his last visit and took efforts to further the cause of communal harmony, social reform and the ideals of the freedom movement.


The Gandhi Mandap memorial has been set up to commemorate his memory and propagate his ideals of truth, non-violence and peace.


Memorial opened to the public on 2 October 1970, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. It was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi along with Assam's then Chief Minister Bishnuram Medhi.

A museum of Mahatma Gandhi's life and philosophy forms part of the memorial complex.

The statue was inaugurated in 1970, and it is situated in the Gandhi Mandap complex. There are also historical evidences linking the piece with famous Indian sculptor Ramkinkar Baij.

📌The Giant National Flag


The other notable features of Gandhi Mandap are its gigantic Indian National flag and a 5-meter-tall statue of Gandhi.


In 2019, a tall flagpole was erected at Gandhi Mandap to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi. Assam Tourism mentions the giant National flag as one of the major attractions of the place.


The Tricolour, which is raised over Sarania Hill, makes the place even more spectacular.

The “Purva Prabha – The Ray of the East” 3D projection mapping show tells the story of Assam's history and cultural heritage. The show is based on the history of Assam, the rulers of Assam, freedom movement & the role of Mahatma Gandhi in Assam. It is a combination of projection mapping, architectural lighting and surround sound.


This project brings a contemporary approach to the memorial, with an educational and entertaining experience for all.


📌Gandhi Mandap has been recently developed.


Gandhi Mandap is still attracting the attention of the tourists and is one of the important heritage sites in Guwahati.


In this regard, the Guwahati Smart City Limited has embarked on refurbishment and beautification task for the Gandhi Mandap Memorial Complex. The project features the creation of green spaces, enhancing the Gandhi statue area, upgrading the stage and shade areas, setting up food stalls, forest trails, walkways, lighting, drinking-water facilities, and toilets for visitors. This project page was updated in August 2026.


These enhancements aim to maintain the historic significance of Gandhi Mandap while also enhancing its appeal and usability for visitors.


📌Gandhi Mandap is best visited during the summer season.


Gandhi Mandap is open for viewing all year round. According to Assam Tourism, its timings are 7 AM to 7 PM.


Morning or late afternoon will be a better time of the day to visit for a more pleasant experience as the weather will be more pleasant and the surroundings of the hill top will be enjoyable.

📌Visitor information about how to reach Gandhi Mandap.


Private vehicles/cabs are available to take you to Gandhi Mandap. The memorial is on a hill called Sarania Hill so the road goes up to the top of the hill. Assam Tourism estimates it to be approximately 4 km from Guwahati Railway Station.

From different parts of Guwahati, the visitors can hire taxi or cab or private car.

Guwahati Railway Station is the nearest major railway station, which is about 4 km from here.


✈️By Air


The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, located about 25km away, is the closest airport.
